The Eastern Cape Provincial Government, together with the family members of the fallen heroes of the 1992 Bhisho Massacre, have recently gathered at the War Memorial, in Bhisho in remembrance of the fallen heroes. 2021 marks 29 years since the 1992 historic Bhisho Massacre, which saw the merciless killing of 28 marchers and one soldier, as well as injuring over 200 people. Family members gathered during a gloomy morning, to lay wreaths in remembrance of their family members who were gunned down by the then Ciskei Defence Force.
Eastern Cape Premier, Lubabalo Oscar Mabuyane said more has to be done to ensure that younger generations are acquainted with the many sacrifices for freedom, such as the Bhisho Massacre - by getting them actively involved in commemorating such days. Premier Mabuyane also said the Provincial Government is ensuring that survivors and family members of fallen victims of the massacre are skilled and capacitated to guarantee a brighter future for them
As a caring government we understand that many of our fallen heroes and heroines left behind loved ones in distress, we have instructed government departments to prioritize survivors and families of the victims of the Massacre when it comes to capacitating people and delivering services like houses. Department such as the Department of Justice is rolling out bursaries for children of those killed and wounded this day 29 years ago.” Premier said.
By ensuring that academically deserving children have access to education, we are shaping their future so that one day we will get pilots, CEO s, Engineers and Astronauts,” He added.
