The Eastern Cape Provincial Government continues with the August month programme-of-action to commemorate Women s Month through various activities aimed at celebrating, as well as highlighting the important role played by women in society recently.
The Eastern Cape Department of Social Development, working with the Office of the Premier, officially renamed the Burgersdorp Child and Youth Care Centre after Ms Lulama Futshane today. Futshane was an instrumental figure in the fight against apartheid.
A student activist born in Steynsburg, she played a significant role in the fight against Apartheid in the Joe Gqabi District. From 1985 to 1989, she played a pivotal role in mobilizing the
progressive forces of mainly students as well as communities to partake in the consumer boycotts.
It was at the height of her activism that she was targeted by the Apartheid Security Branch, and eventually shot and killed on the 04th of July 1990 while participating in a protest against Apartheid.
Today Government remembers her legacy, as an activist who contributed immensely in the liberation of our country.
The centre's mandate is to rehabilitate troubled youth, educate and skill them to integrate them back into society, where they would contribute positively.
