The Eastern Cape has strengthened its position as South Africa s automotive and clean-mobility hub with the official launch of the 6th EV charging station in Port Alfred. The charger, one of 15 fully operational across the province was unveiled yesterday at the Royal St Andrews Hotel by Economic Development, Environmental Affairs, and Tourism MEC Nonkqubela Pieters.
Launched ahead of the festive season, the station supports Port Alfred s popularity as a December tourism destination and provides travellers with a seamless, reliable charging experience. The provincial EV network links KwaZulu-Natal, the Free State and the Western Cape, ensuring long-distance trips can include the Eastern Cape without range anxiety.
MEC Pieters said expanding EV infrastructure positions the province at the forefront of e-mobility. Recent events such as the NAACAM Show and SA Autoweek show the Eastern Cape s commitment to sustainable automotive innovation.
Royal St Andrews Hotel General Manager, Mr Difford Louw, welcomed the investment, noting that the charger boosts tourism and local business. A journalist who came to charge their vehicle at the hotel ended up staying three nights and later published a positive review, clear proof of the economic value of clean-energy infrastructure.
These investments support the priorities of the Provincial Medium-Term Development Plan, helping the province stay competitive, drive inclusive growth, create jobs and advance green industrial development.
