EASTERN CAPE FIRES UP SERVICE DELIVERY WITH R1.9 BILLION TARGETED BUDGET BOOST

The Eastern Cape s 2025/26 Adjusted Budget channels R1.99 billion into stabilising core services, protecting frontline workers, and sustaining essential programmes as the province confronts tightening fiscal space and rising service demands. Delivered by Finance MEC Mlungisi Mvoko, the Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement places allocations at the centre of a strategy to safeguard impact where it matters most.

Health emerges as the biggest winner, receiving a massive R963.8 million injection. This includes R514.2 million to clear accruals, R108.6 million to employ 429 health professionals, and R107.5 million to absorb 3 971 Community Health Workers. An additional R94 million cushions the province from the withdrawal of PEPFAR funding.

Education follows with R795.5 million, including R390.8 million to retain and appoint educators. A further R281 million from the ECD grant boosts early learning subsidies and expands access for children under five. The Office of the Premier receives R136.8 million, frontloaded to support broadband connectivity across nearly 2,000 government sites, an essential lifeline for digital services and modern governance.

Infrastructure stability continues with R26.5 million to Public Works and Infrastructure, ensuring momentum on key capital projects. Transport secures R232 million, while Human Settlements receives R7 million for enhanced project monitoring.

Other targeted allocations include funding for the Provincial Legislature, COGTA disaster response and initiation monitoring with, and support for tourism, auto sector events, and biodiversity interventions through Department of Economic Development Environmental Affairs and Tourism.

With the allocation-focused adjusted budget, the Eastern Cape asserts a clear message; to protect essential services, invest where impact is highest, and keep the province stable amid tightening fiscal winds.
