The Eastern Cape Department of Health, under the leadership of MEC Ntandokazi Capa, in partnership with Operation Smile South Africa (OSSA) and the National Department of Health, has delivered a renewed wave of hope to children and families through free cleft lip and palate surgeries in Mthatha.
Held at the Nelson Mandela Academic Hospital, the annual medical mission saw over 40 patients from across the province assessed by a multidisciplinary team of volunteer specialists. About 30 transformative surgeries were successfully performed, restoring not only smiles but dignity and confidence to children born with cleft conditions.
Running parallel to the surgeries, an integrated oral health outreach at Mthatha Regional Hospital offered free dental services to approximately 1,500 residents. Over 50 dental professionals provided screenings, cleanings, fillings, and extractions, while oral health education sessions reached 13 local schools, reinforcing the importance of prevention and good hygiene.
MEC Capa hailed the initiative as a demonstration of how collaboration between government and non-profit partners can deliver quality, equitable healthcare. Safe surgery and good oral health are essential for well-being and dignity.
Our goal is to ensure that no child misses school and no adult misses work, because of oral health challenges or faces stigma because of a treatable condition. Prevention, treatment, and education remain at the heart of our efforts”, she said.
Executive Director of Operation Smile South Africa, Sarah Scarth, said the partnership continues to strengthen local healthcare systems. Together, we are restoring smiles and building sustainable, comprehensive cleft and oral healthcare in the province,” she said.
