Daily life has become easier and safer for residents of Sihlahleni and Welakabini villages in Ward 6, Umzimvubu Local Municipality, following the completion of a new bridge under the Welisizwe Rural Bridges Programme. The bridge has opened new pathways for community members to reach schools, health facilities, workplaces, and markets with greater ease and reliability.
Constructed in EmaXesibeni, the bridge has brought much-needed relief to residents. The bridge connects communities to Mwaca local clinic, as well as pupils of Dumisa, Mlungiseleli and Machibini schools. This bridge is improving the livelihoods of the rural communities of Ward 6 and surroundings. Its construction brought significant social and economic spin-offs to the area”, said Umzimvubu Local Municipality Mayor, Cllr Zukiswa Ndevu.
Approximately 40 people were employed during the construction phase, creating jobs and injecting income into local households. Economically, the bridge improved access to markets, boosting local trade and encouraging small business growth. Socially, it strengthened community connectivity and reduced travel time, fostering greater interaction among residents and neighbouring areas. Overall, the bridge serves as a catalyst for local development and long-term economic resilience.
Given that municipality is predominantly rural and prone to heavy summer rains, this intervention provides a durable and reliable solution. The bridge is built with strong steel materials, allowing safe use even after heavy rains,” Cllr Ndevu stated.
The Welisizwe Programme, led by the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure (DPWI) in partnership with the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) and the Provincial Department of Transport, is designed to connect rural communities to essential services and unlock local development opportunities.
