The Eastern Cape Provincial Government, in conjunction with Walter Sisulu University (WSU), hosted a profound Heritage Day celebration dedicated to commemorating the 150th birth anniversary of the revered isiXhosa literary giant, Samuel Edward Krune Mqhayi. The event, held at the Ntabozuko Campus of WSU, drew a significant gathering of dignitaries, traditional leaders, academics, students, and citizens, all united in honouring Mqhayi's indelible contribution to South African heritage and identity.
The commemoration commenced with a solemn wreath-laying ceremony at Mqhayi's gravesite, a poignant tribute to his enduring legacy. This was followed by a heritage tree planting ceremony, symbolising the continuous growth of knowledge and culture, and a student literacy session, emphasizing the importance of education and the preservation of indigenous languages.
Acting Eastern Cape Premier Mlungisi Mvoko delivered a powerful address, highlighting Mqhayi as "one of the greatest literacy giants ever produced on African soil." He emphasised Mqhayi's advocacy for African unity and his critique of colonialism through his literary talents, including his contribution of seven stanzas to "Nkosi Sikelel' i-Afrika."
"Through his words, his poems, his prose, and his cultural reflections, he became a voice that carried our struggles, our aspirations, and our dignity as Africans at a time when our identity was under siege. S.E.K. Mqhayi came to embody the essence of our heritage," stated Acting Premier Mvoko.
Premier Mvoko urged young people to embrace the baton of leadership, using education, innovation, and creativity to shape a brighter future for the Eastern Cape. He reiterated that heritage is not merely a historical relic but a living resource that inspires dreams and hard work, building a future that honors the sacrifices of past generations.
The 150th anniversary commemoration of S.E.K. Mqhayi served as a powerful reminder of the importance of preserving indigenous knowledge, customs, and languages. It reaffirmed the Eastern Cape Provincial Government's commitment to renewal, inclusive growth, and transformation, with education, culture, and heritage as foundational pillars for development. The event successfully showcased how Mqhayi's legacy continues to be a living force.
Also present on the day were members of the Provincial Executive Council including Department of Sport Recreation Arts and Culture (DSRAC) MEC Sibulele Ngongo, as well as the Executive Mayor of Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality, and Vice Chancellor of Walter Sisulu University, Prof. Rushiella Nolundi Songca.
