Eastern Cape Provincial Government Officially Hands Over Modern Cebe Primary School

The Eastern Cape Provincial Government, through its Department of Education, has officially handed over the newly rebuilt Cebe Primary School in the Mnquma Local Municipality. The R54.7 million facility is a state-of-the-art institution designed to provide learners with a modern and conducive environment for quality education.

With Coega Development Agency as the implementing agency, construction began in 2017 and reached final completion in October 2024. The new facilities cover 1,972m² and include an administration block, Grade R classrooms, eight additional classrooms, a science laboratory, a multimedia centre, a multipurpose classroom, a dining and nutrition centre, and modern ablution facilities. External improvements feature a parking area and assembly slab, ensuring a safe and conducive environment for teaching and learning.

Cebe Primary now caters for learners from Grade R to Grade 9, with 435 enrolled pupils and a staff complement of 16, including educators, assistants, and administrative personnel.

Originally established in the early 18th century as a missionary institution, Cebe Primary School had for years struggled with dilapidated classrooms, pit latrines, and no reliable water infrastructure.

Speaking at the handover, Education MEC Fundile Gade highlighted the project as a clear example of government s commitment to eradicating unsafe infrastructure in schools and promoting equal access to quality education.
