In a heartfelt response to the recent floods that disrupted schooling in Mthatha, the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA), in partnership with the Eastern Cape Department of Social Development, has provided new school uniforms to nearly 140 affected learners. The initiative was led by Social Development MEC, Bukiwe Fanta.
Learners from three schools benefited from the support, with 49 from Gobizizwe Agricultural School, 43 from Sinolwazi Senior Secondary School, and 47 from Fairfield Primary School. Each learner received a full set of uniforms, including shirts, trousers, skirts, and shoes.
MEC Fanta reaffirmed government s commitment to education, noting that children should not be denied learning opportunities because of unforeseen hardships. Education is a fundamental right, and no child should be deprived of this opportunity due to circumstances beyond their control. We stand together to reaffirm our commitment to our learners and to ensure they can attend school with pride,” she said.
Parents and guardians welcomed the support, describing it as timely and impactful. This help means so much to us. We are grateful that our children can return to school properly dressed and ready to learn,” said one parent.
The initiative forms part of a broader provincial strategy to improve access to education for disadvantaged learners. Beyond uniforms, the Eastern Cape Provincial Government has committed to addressing the wider social and economic challenges families face in the wake of the floods.
MEC Fanta also emphasised the importance of sustained recovery efforts: We recognise that families continue to face many challenges as they rebuild their lives. Working with stakeholders, we will ensure that comprehensive support is provided to those in need.”
Eastern Cape SASSA Head, Bandile Maqetuka, highlighted the agency s role in protecting vulnerable children, saying Our priority as SASSA is to protect the most vulnerable in our society, especially children.”
