MEC Bukiwe Fanta Leads Relief Efforts for Disaster Victims in Barkly East

Eastern Cape Social Development MEC, Bukiwe Fanta, provided support and delivered essential supplies to families affected by the recent snow disasters in Barkley East, Joe Gqabi District. The visit is part of the province's ongoing commitment to assist vulnerable communities in times of crisis.

The outreach included the distribution of essential supplies such as blankets, food parcels, hygiene products, and warm clothing. These deliverables were crucial for families struggling to cope with the aftermath of the snow disaster, particularly vulnerable groups such as the elderly, children, and individuals with disabilities.

During her visit, MEC Fanta met with local community leaders and representatives from various organizations to assess the situation and understand the specific needs of the affected families. It is our responsibility to ensure that no one is left behind during such challenging times. We are here today to show solidarity with the people of Barkley East and to provide the necessary support,” she stated. MEC Fanta highlighted the importance of community resilience in times of crisis. While we are here to provide immediate assistance, we must also focus on long-term recovery strategies. Our aim is to empower communities to rebuild and recover from these disasters,” she explained.

The response from the community was overwhelmingly positive, with many residents expressing gratitude for the support they received. Local resident, Mrs. Nkosazana Mthethwa, shared her appreciation, saying, We are grateful for the assistance. The snow has made things very difficult for us, and this support means a lot to our families.”

In addition to providing immediate relief, MEC Fanta emphasised the importance of ongoing collaboration among government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and community members. We must work together to ensure that we are better prepared for future disasters. This includes developing early warning systems and creating community response plans,” she noted.

MEC Fanta also addressed the need for mental health support for those affected by the snow disaster. The emotional toll of such events can be significant. We encourage those struggling to reach out for help and to utilize the mental health services available in our communities,” she added.

The outreach initiative also included an awareness campaign on disaster preparedness and response. MEC Fanta urged residents to stay informed about safety measures and to take proactive steps to protect themselves and their families during adverse weather conditions. This is part of a broader strategy and commitment by the Eastern Provincial Government to enhance its response to disasters and ensure that support is accessible to all those affected.
