Over 40,000 residents of Ingquza Hill Local Municipality have received critical health and social services during the successful rollout of Project OWETHU 2025: Nced uLuntu Programme.” The 14-day initiative, which ran from 18 July to 1 August, was mainly spearheaded by the Eastern Cape Department of Social Development in partnership with the South African Military Health Services (SAMHS).
The project brought a comprehensive package of support to rural communities, addressing medical, social, and developmental needs. Services included health screenings, vaccinations, oral hygiene support, and psychological care. MEC for Social Development, Bukiwe Fanta, confirmed that 1,360 people received oral health services, 208 accessed mental health support, and 851 received social work assistance.Additionally, over 730 individuals were assisted through SASSA services, ensuring access to social grants and welfare support.
A key highlight of the programme was its youth empowerment drive. More than 5,000 learners benefited from educational sessions focused on nutrition, oral health, substance abuse prevention, and environmental hygiene. The initiative also distributed food parcels, clothing, and sanitary pads to over 600 vulnerable learners, directly addressing basic needs.
As Project OWETHU 2025 ends, Fanta expressed government s commitment to sustaining the momentum generated by the programme. While we celebrate the achievements of this initiative, we must also focus on ensuring that the services provided continue to meet the needs of our communities,” she stated.
General Officer Commanding of Area Military Health Formation Brigadier General Mcebisi Mdutywa stated that the Eastern Cape Province, with its vast geographical challenges and socio-economic difficulties, was identified as a key area of focus. Our presence here is a testament to the South African National Defence Force commitment to serving humanity and promoting the values of compassion, care, and service," Mdutywa said.
Community members lauded the involvement of SANDF and applauded the initiative for bringing essential services to their doorsteps. The programme also encouraged local participation, fostering a strong sense of ownership and community engagement.
