The Eastern Cape Provincial Government, in partnership with the Nelson Mandela Museum and other key stakeholders, marked this year s Mandela Day with heartwarming community activities in the Raymond Mhlaba Local Municipality. The three-day programme celebrated Madiba s legacy with a focus on service, unity and remembrance.
The main event was held today at the historic Healdtown High School, one of the schools that shaped Nelson Mandela s early life. Activities included the painting of the historic Mandela Hostel Block were Mandela resided during his schooling years, a gesture symbolising the preservation of his legacy and the official handover of a newly built exhibition centre that will boost cultural tourism and education in the area.
Acting Premier Mlungisi Mvoko, who attended the event, praised the collaborative spirit shown throughout the programme. This was more than a celebration it was an opportunity to give back and reflect on the values Madiba lived by. We honoured his life not with words, but with meaningful action,” he said.
The build-up to the main event saw a range of vibrant activities. Earlier in the week, residents gathered at Tony Yengeni Square in KwaMaqoma for a health outreach campaign, where they received essential services like medical screenings and wellness education. The initiative aimed to restore dignity and care for those in need, reflecting Madiba s compassion.
Furthermore, young people and community members came together at Ngumbela Sports Field for a fun-filled sports activation. Games like mini cricket, soccer, netball, rugby, and indigenous games brought people together in the spirit of teamwork, health and joy.
As the birthplace of Nelson Mandela, the Eastern Cape once again showed its pride and commitment to carrying forward his legacy through collective effort, active citizenship, and the true spirit of Ubuntu.
