In a proactive move to uplift the local economy, Kumkani Mhlontlo Local Municipality has rolled out targeted support for rural enterprises. Through its Rural Enterprise Programme, the municipality handed over groceries to four local spaza shop owners as part of its efforts to boost sustainability and resilience in the rural economy.
Spaza shops play a crucial role in rural communities by providing daily necessities, particularly in areas far from urban centres. Recognising this, the provincial government continues to ensure that these small businesses comply with food safety standards and municipal bylaws.
In a broader effort to empower local enterprises, the municipality has partnered with key stakeholders including the Department of Small Business Development and the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition to provide valuable business support, including access to funding and clear operational guidelines. Community outreach engagements were held in June, creating a platform for local business owners to access information, build networks, and receive on-the-ground support.
Additionally, through its SMME Programme, the municipality distributed promotional materials to local tourism organisations. This initiative aims to boost tourism marketing and promote the area s unique offerings as part of a broader strategy to stimulate economic growth.
These coordinated programmes reflect the government s dedication to bridging economic divides and fostering inclusive development across the province.
