In the wake of the devastating floods that struck the Eastern Cape, the power of collaboration has emerged as a cornerstone of the province s response to the disaster. With 101 confirmed deaths and thousands displaced, a robust partnership between the state, civil society, and the private sector has shaped a swift and coordinated response.
Speaking at a media briefing this week, Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs MEC Zolile Williams, acknowledged the role played by non-governmental organisations and private companies in supporting relief efforts. Humanitarian organisations such as Gift of the Givers, Al Imdaad Foundation, the Black Coffee Foundation, and As-Siraatul Haqq Foundation have been instrumental in delivering food, blankets, and emergency shelter. Corporates like Old Mutual and MTN also stepped in, providing vital resources to affected communities. Funeral service provider AVBOB offered free transportation, storage, and burial services for victims, easing the burden on grieving families.
SASSA and the Department of Education are providing financial and material support to affected families. Essential services are being restored, with over 80% of electricity and 95% of water supply already reinstated in affected areas. Mobile units from the Department of Home Affairs have processed hundreds of ID replacements, while healthcare and psychosocial services continue to support the traumatised. Government has identified land for resettlement and is working on Temporary Residential Units and long-term housing solutions.
The floods caused extensive infrastructure damage, with R5.1 billion needed for repairs, including roads, schools, and health facilities. A National Disaster has been declared, unlocking national resources for recovery. MEC Williams committed to financial transparency and urged the media to respect the dignity of the deceased during ongoing recovery efforts. He further, on behalf of the Provincial Government, expressed deep condolences to affected families and described the floods as one of the most painful events in the province s recent history.
