As part of the Youth Day Commemoration build up programme, the Eastern Cape Provincial Government, through the Education Department, officially launched Phase 5 of the Basic Education Employment Initiative (BEEI) today in Dordrecht, within the Chris Hani District Municipality. In the Chris Hani West Education District alone, about 2,000 youth stand to benefit from the programme, with over 28,000 opportunities available across the province.
The initiative, which is part of a broader national strategy, aims to empower young people by providing them with temporary employment and valuable skills training in the education sector. Already, since the inception of this programme, over 20,000 temporary employment opportunities have been created for unemployed youth in the Eastern Cape.
Youth selected for the programme are placed in schools Education Assistants (EAs) and General School Assistants (GSAs), where they receive hands-on experience areas such as curriculum support, ICT, reading, child and youth care, infrastructure, and sport development.
For many young people, BEEI represents a first chance at workplace experience or skills development, and for others, it s a vital bridge toward long-term career opportunities.
As youth unemployment continues to challenge the province, initiatives like the BEEI offer more than just income, they provide dignity, purpose, and a sense of belonging. The initiative was more than just a temporary job; it is a steppingstone to future prospects.
