The Eastern Cape Provincial Government has taken another decisive step in advancing infrastructure development with the launch of the Quenera Lagoon Access Road upgrade project in East London. The R100 million project will see the improvement of a 4 kilometre stretch of gravel road between Gonubie Main Road, Mzamomhle, and Quenera Lagoon into a surfaced asphalt road.
Spearheaded by the Eastern Cape Department of Transport in partnership with the Buffalo City Metro, the Quenera Lagoon Access Road project marks a major investment in community connectivity and development. With R75 million committed by the provincial Transport Department and an additional R25 million from the Metro, this initiative aims to improve access, stimulate local tourism, and unlock economic opportunities for surrounding areas.
The project will include sidewalks, stormwater drainage, and street lighting, enhancing both mobility and safety. Phase one is expected to be completed by March next year, with phase two beginning immediately after. Local labour and SMMEs will be prioritised, supporting job creation and enterprise development.
Eastern Cape MEC for Transport Xolile Nqatha and Buffalo City Metro Executive Mayor Princess Faku officiated the sod-turning of Quenera Lagoon Access Road upgrade. MEC Nqatha hailed the project as a testament to the positive impact of collaboration between provincial and local government, saying, "This project is a testament that when provincial and local government collaborate, it improves people's lives.
Mayor Faku welcomed the project, expressing appreciation for the province s continued support. Our residents have been waiting for this road. Thanks to this partnership, we are now able to deliver infrastructure that changes lives,” she said.
