The reconstruction of Greenville Hospital is set to reshape the healthcare landscape in Bizana, restoring dignity and delivering quality services to rural communities in the Eastern Cape.
The Eastern Cape Department of Health has officially launched a major upgrade of the facility, with more than R400 million committed to the project over multiple phases. Health MEC Ntandokazi Capa visited the hospital to hand over the construction site for the first phase, valued at R184 million.
This transformative project is a critical step toward improving healthcare services in the Winnie Madikizela-Mandela Local Municipality. It is aligned with the Eastern Cape Provincial Government s R3 billion five-year plan, announced by Premier Lubabalo Oscar Mabuyane, to build new clinics and rehabilitate existing healthcare infrastructure across the province.
The upgraded hospital will offer a full range of services including emergency care, maternal health, and chronic disease management.
Previously a 100-bed district hospital, the new Greenville hospital will feature a state-of-the-art core block housing male and female wards, a paediatric unit, an infectious disease ward, administrative and service areas, staff accommodation, and the removal of outdated structures to align with the new facility's modern design.
Beyond enhancing healthcare access, the project is expected to generate local job opportunities, further contributing to the socio-economic upliftment of the area. This initiative reaffirms the provincial government s commitment to ensuring accessible, high-quality healthcare for all Eastern Cape residents.
