Improved Sanitation and Water Supply Restores Dignity in Eastern Cape Villages

The lives of people in the Emalahleni Local Municipality and across the Chris Hani District are set to become better following the official handover of vital water and sanitation infrastructure projects. For over 400 households in villages like Fani, Ntshingeni, and Maqhubela, the completion of toilet facilities means an end to undignified conditions, improved health outcomes, and enhanced safety.

Water and Sanitation Minister Pemmy Majodina, and Eastern Cape Premier Lubabalo Oscar Mabuyane, led the handover, joined by Executive Mayor of Chris Hani District Municipality, Cllr Lusanda Sizani, and Mayor of Emalahleni Local Municipality, Cllr Ntombizanele Koni, in Fani Village. There, the focus was on the handover of the new sanitation facilities, as part of a broader Rural Sanitation Rollout Project benefiting local municipalities district-wide.

This is a significant step towards improving daily life as well as restoring dignity, and it is a concrete service delivery that directly benefits communities.

The day also highlighted progress on other critical water infrastructure projects, including upgrades to the Indwe Water Treatment Works and the Xonxa Pump Station, aimed at ensuring reliable water supply for more residents.

The Eastern Cape Provincial Government remains steadfast in prioritising municipal infrastructure development to fundamentally improve the quality of life for its people. The day's events culminated in a community engagement session in Indwe, providing a direct line for residents' concerns and reaffirming the government's unwavering commitment to investing in essential services that make a tangible difference in people's lives.
