A high-level delegation led by the Manufacturing, Engineering and Related Services Sector Education and Training Authority (MerSETA) visited the Eastern Cape Province to assess the progress of the Eastern Cape - MerSETA Mega Project. The delegation included MerSETA CEO Mr. Naphtaly Mokgotsane and Finance and Grants Committee (FGC) Chairperson Mr. Thapelo Molapo, who were received in East London this week by AIDC-EC CEO Thabo Shenxane and high-ranking officials from Office of the Premier.

The primary focus of the visit was to monitor key interventions within the Mega Project, specifically the Apprenticeship Programme and the Artisan Recognition of Prior Learning (ARPL) initiative. This multi-million-rand initiative aims to uplift and equip over 2,000 young people in the province with critical skills necessary for economic participation and employment.

The Eastern Cape Mega Project is a significant investment by MerSETA, with funding exceeding R200 million. This financial commitment is designed to support a variety of skills training interventions, including the Completion Bursary (Historical Debt) initiative. The project strategically targets industries experiencing skills shortages, ensuring that young South Africans are equipped to contribute meaningfully to the economy.

Among the flagship programmes, 200 apprenticeship placements have been created to enhance expertise in technical fields such as medical equipment repair and auto electrical work.

The monitoring visit reaffirms a commitment from government and all its stakeholders, to sustaining skills development efforts as well as fostering job creation and industrial growth in the Eastern Cape.
