The Eastern Cape Provincial Government s commitment to lighting up its communities is gaining momentum with Amahlathi Local Municipality in collaboration with Eskom, officially handing over electricity construction project at Keilands Village in Stutterheim.

The electrification of Keilands is part of the province s broader strategy to extend essential services to rural and previously disadvantaged communities. The project, which required extensive research and significant financial investment, addresses a long-standing infrastructure gap and brings modern energy solutions to the residents of this area who have been living without electricity.

This project will not only transform the community but also yield economic benefits, with 17 job opportunities for local youth over the next three months created.

Zamekile Dlakadla, who has lived in the area for over 40 years, expressed his joy, stating that this development will significantly improve his daily life. Meanwhile another resident, Pamela Kolisi shared her gratitude, emphasizing the convenience and opportunities that access to electricity will bring.

The Eastern Cape has made great strides in electrification, with 95% of households now having access to power. In the current financial year alone, the province connected 16,446 households to the grid, improving living standards across various municipalities, including Khutsong in Matatiele, Trako in Mhlontlo, Valencia in Sunday s River Valley, and Mitford in Enoch Mgijima.

Moreover, the Provincial Government has committed R430 million for the electrification of an additional 8,981 households in the 2025/26 financial year. This investment demonstrates the Eastern Cape s unwavering pledge to accelerate service delivery and ensure that every community benefits from infrastructure development.
