Eastern Cape Economic Roundtable Charts Path to Inclusive Growth

The Eastern Cape Provincial Economic Roundtable on Inclusive Economic Growth took place this week in East London, bringing together key stakeholders from government, business, and academia to forge a roadmap for the province s economic future.

The roundtable focused on positioning the Eastern Cape as a competitive and sustainable economic hub, ensuring that growth benefits all citizens. Policymakers, development agencies, government, and representatives from both small enterprises and large corporations engaged in discussions on accelerating economic growth and resilience in the province.

Robust dialogue was held, seeking practical solutions to reduce red tape, attract investment, and align economic strategies with provincial development goals. Participants discussed innovative and collaborative approaches to economic development, as well as ways to strengthen the province s ability to withstand economic, social, and environmental challenges. Addressing bureaucratic obstacles to accelerate growth was also a key focus, along with enhancing value addition in key sectors including manufacturing, automotive, and agro-processing.

Premier Lubabalo Oscar Mabuyane emphasized the importance of collective action, stating, We need all sectors under one roof to align on a common vision and direction. This roundtable allows us to exchange ideas and refine our economic strategies as we work towards the 2030 vision.”

Premier Mabuyane outlined the province's vision for balanced socio-economic development, aiming to spread industrial benefits beyond major cities and capitalize on the potential of agriculture, tourism, and the ocean economy.

Infrastructure projects in energy, transport, and roads are underway to support these sectors. Crucially, job creation and skills development initiatives for youth and SMMEs are central to the plan, with significant investments earmarked for training and entrepreneurship.
