A ground-breaking cataract surgery outreach at the Oliver and Adelaide Tambo Regional Hospital in Mbizana has transformed the lives of 75 patients from Alfred Nzo and OR Tambo Districts, restoring their eyesight and independence.
This collaborative initiative between the South African National Council for the Blind and the Eastern Cape Department of Health, addresses the long-standing backlog of cataract surgeries in the region. Expert ophthalmologists from Nelson Mandela Academic Hospital have played a pivotal role, sharing their specialized skills to operate on patients and improve their vision.
For many beneficiaries, mostly the elderly, vision loss has significantly impacted daily activities and livelihoods. These surgeries mark a significant turning point, enabling patients to regain independence, enhance their quality of life, and re-engage in daily activities.
This outreach demonstrates the power of collaboration in tackling healthcare challenges in the Eastern Cape. "We are grateful for the partnership with the South African National Council for the Blind and Nelson Mandela Academic Hospital," said Health MEC Ntandokazi Capa. "Together, we are making a tangible difference in the lives of our citizens."
Seventy-five patients benefited from the cataract surgeries performed by expert ophthalmologists.
This outreach embodies the commitment to improving healthcare outcomes and enhancing the quality of life for Eastern Cape residents.
