The Eastern Cape Provincial Government, in collaboration with local businesses and community leaders, will hold a memorial service this coming Sunday to honour the 18 victims of the Lusikisiki Massacre. This solemn event will provide a meaningful space for reflection, remembrance, and collective healing for the families and the community.
In addition to the memorial, the government, with the support of various business partners, will provide material assistance to the bereaved families. This support will help them to hold dignified funeral services for their loved ones, easing the financial burden and ensuring that the deceased are laid to rest with the honour they deserve.
Premier Oscar Mabuyane expressed his solidarity with the families, stating, We stand with those who suffered unimaginable loss during the Lusikisiki Massacre. The memorial service is a crucial step in our ongoing commitment to preserve the memory of those we lost and to provide support to the families who continue to carry the weight of this tragedy.”
Earlier this week, Police Minister Senzo Mchunu, accompanied by Premier Lubabalo Oscar Mabuyane, National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola, and MEC for Community Safety Xolile Nqatha, visited the crime scene before meeting with the grieving families. The visit aimed to assess the situation, support affected families, and reassure the community that justice will be served.
Minister Senzo Mchunu, alongside Premier Oscar Mabuyane, also held a community engagement session to address growing concerns about rising crime in the area. The session provided a platform for residents to voice their fears and frustrations, while leaders outlined potential strategies and solutions to enhance safety and security in the community.
