The Eastern Cape proudly celebrated the International Day of Older Persons, reaffirming its dedication to the well-being and dignity of senior citizens. This special day serves as a reminder to honour the wisdom and contributions of elders while addressing the challenges they face.
Considerable progress has been made in the province to improve elderly care. Recent initiatives include health screenings in the Chris Hani District, reaching 50 older persons, and care support for over 1,775 elderly citizens through the Department of Social Development. Military veterans have also received new homes and economic development opportunities in the Nelson Mandela Metro.
However, the Acting Premier on the day, MEC Zolile Williams, emphasized the urgent need to tackle elderly abuse and exploitation. "Many elderly citizens endure horrific crimes, from murder to pension fraud and false accusations of witchcraft," he said. "We cannot tolerate such inhumanity."
The province has outlined critical actions to protect the elderly, including safeguarding pension access, improving healthcare, ensuring safe housing, and supporting food security. New awareness campaigns, in partnership with local leaders, aim to educate communities about the rights and protection of older people.
"Our elders are not just our history but also active participants in shaping our future," Williams said. "We must value and protect them."
The province remains committed to ensuring senior citizens enjoy their golden years with dignity, free from fear and abuse.
