The Eastern Cape Provincial Government has officially opened the Laura Mphahlwa Oncology Unit at Nelson Mandela Academic Hospital in Mthatha, marking a significant milestone in expanding access to specialised cancer treatment in the province. Led by Premier Lubabalo Oscar Mabuyane and Health MEC Ntandokazi Capa, represents a major step towards reducing the burden on patients who have historically travelled long distances to access oncology services.
The facility will serve patients from OR Tambo, Alfred Nzo, Chris Hani and Joe Gqabi districts, bringing essential cancer treatment closer to their homes and families. Previously, patients from these areas had to travel to facilities such as Frere Hospital in East London, approximately 400 kilometres from Mthatha, placing additional financial and emotional strain on patients and their families.
Addressing guests at the opening, Premier Mabuyane said the investment was aimed at ensuring that geographical distance and poverty do not prevent people from accessing quality healthcare. The Premier described this initiative as an important intervention towards correcting historical inequalities in access to specialised healthcare. He further emphasised that the value of the facility would be measured by its impact on patients, including reduced travel costs, improved access to treatment and the ability of families to remain close to their loved ones during treatment.
Named in honour of Dr Laura Mphahlwa, a respected Eastern Cape nurse, community development champion, philanthropist, businesswoman and anti-apartheid activist, the oncology unit also recognises the invaluable contribution of nurses and healthcare professionals who continue to serve communities with dedication and compassion. “The success of this facility will depend not only on its infrastructure, but also on having skilled healthcare professionals, reliable equipment, adequate medicines and effective patient care”, said Premier Mabuyane.
The centre provides specialised cancer treatment, including chemotherapy, radiotherapy and brachytherapy, supported by two Linear Accelerator (LINAC) machines. It has 68 inpatient beds, comprising 30 each for male and female patients and eight paediatric and neonatal beds. Additional facilities include consultation and counselling rooms, a chemotherapy unit, oncology pharmacy, isolation and recovery rooms. A link bridge connects the centre to the existing hospital, providing access to radiology, laboratories and theatres. The building also allows for two additional floors to accommodate future expansion.
“The opening of the Dr Laura Mphahlwa Oncology Unit marks an important step towards bringing specialised cancer treatment closer communities across the Eastern Cape. We remain committed to strengthening our healthcare facilities and improving access to quality healthcare services for our people”, Health MEC Ntandokazi Capa stated.
