Eastern Cape Social Development MEC Bukiwe Fanta says the refurbished Jansenville service offices must translate into improved access to social services and better support for residents.
Addressing the opening, Fanta said the facility would help bring government services closer to communities, particularly individuals and families facing barriers such as distance, transport costs, disability and limited access to information. “The true value of this facility will not be measured by the building alone. It will be measured by the quality-of-service people receive here, the care shown by our staff and the difference our work makes in the lives of Jansenville residents,” she said.
The Department provides services including child protection, family support, assistance to older persons and people with disabilities, substance-use support, social work and community development. Fanta urged staff to treat every person with dignity, protect confidential information, communicate clearly and ensure that residents understand how to access assistance.
She highlighted the importance of early intervention and protecting children from abuse, neglect, exploitation and violence. This, she said, requires cooperation between government departments, parents and caregivers, schools, health services, social workers and community organisations.
Fanta further emphasised the need for accessible and compassionate services for older persons and people with disabilities, as well as non-judgmental support for individuals affected by substance use. She encouraged families experiencing poverty, unemployment, violence or other social challenges to seek assistance before their circumstances worsen.
The MEC called for stronger partnerships between the Department, municipalities, traditional leaders, non-profit organisations, schools and health services to improve referrals and ensure residents receive appropriate support without being passed between institutions without clear guidance.
She acknowledged the dedication of social development officials, noting that while the refurbished offices provide an improved working environment, effective service delivery ultimately depends on the commitment and professionalism of staff. She also encouraged employees to maintain clear communication with residents, provide feedback on delays and referrals, and respond appropriately to concerns.
Fanta urged staff and the community to take responsibility for maintaining the facility, emphasising that the investment must be matched by a continued commitment to serving Jansenville and surrounding communities. “Let these offices become known as a place where people are welcomed and heard,” she said.
Sarah Baartman District Municipality Executive Mayor Deon de Vos welcomed the opening, saying the refurbished facility would provide residents with a more suitable local point of access to social support and guidance. “Accessible services are essential to building stronger communities. This refurbished office gives residents a more suitable place to seek help and gives staff a better environment in which to serve the public,” he said.
De Vos stressed that the facility's impact would depend on how effectively residents are assisted and called for continued cooperation between government departments, municipalities and community partners to address challenges such as poverty, unemployment and family hardship.
“The opening is a positive step for Jansenville and surrounding communities. Let us work together to ensure this office becomes a trusted place where residents are welcomed, heard and connected to the support they need,” he said.
