For the first time in 25 years, the public will have the power to choose Eastern Cape s Sport Star of the Year. The Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture has announced that voting is now open, giving the public a chance to decide this prestigious award. The exciting news was revealed by MEC Sibulele Ngongo during a media briefing in Gqeberha, where the four remarkable nominees were introduced:
1. Sivenathi ‘The Special One Nontshinga: IBF light-flyweight World Champion
2. Anika Maree: Powerlifting sensation, gold, and silver medallist at the SA Equipped & Classic Powerlifting Champs
3. Jaco Smith: Para-athlete, silver medallist at the North-East German Championships in Germany
4. Ntombomhlontlo Somtswayi: Para-table tennis star, winner of two bronze medals at the 2023 ITTF African Para Championships
Public voting is open from September 18 to October 9, 2024. The Sport Star of the Year award is part of the prestigious Sport and Recreation Achievers Awards, which recognize individuals, federations, and teams excelling in sport from June 1, 2023, to June 30, 2024.
During the launch, MEC Ngongo highlighted the importance of the awards, saying, As we strive to build a vibrant and inclusive sporting culture in the province, we are committed to creating opportunities for our athletes to thrive. Through initiatives like the Sport and Recreation Achievers Awards, we aim to inspire the next generation of champions and promote a culture of excellence.”
The winners will be celebrated at the 2024 Sport Awards Ceremony on October 11, 2024, at the Boardwalk in Gqeberha.
