The Premier s Intergovernmental Forum (PIF), chaired by Premier Lubabalo Oscar Mabuyane in East London, marked a pivotal step in addressing the critical challenges facing the Eastern Cape Province. This was the first PIF of the 7th Administration, bringing together top government leaders to tackle urgent issues, including crime intervention, and the provision of water and sanitation, alongside other key development priorities.
In his opening address, Premier Mabuyane highlighted the importance of strengthening intergovernmental relations to enhance service delivery. This forum is a vital platform for fostering collaboration between provincial government, local municipalities, and national ministries. By working together, we can more effectively address the challenges facing our communities and ensure efficient governance,” he stated.
One of the forum s major focus areas was the development of collaborative crime prevention strategies. Several initiatives are already underway to enhance policing efforts and improve community safety. New partnerships between law enforcement agencies, local governments, and community leaders will be instrumental in the rollout of these strategies.
The forum also prioritized road infrastructure development, recognizing it as a key driver of economic growth. It reaffirmed the government s commitment to accelerating these projects, improving connectivity, and facilitating the transportation of goods and services across the province.
Central to the discussions was the institutionalization of the District Development Model (DDM), which aims to align the efforts of local municipalities with provincial and national goals. The DDM will serve as a framework for improving service delivery at the district level, promoting a more unified and effective approach to governance.
Widely regarded as a success, the forum set a strong foundation for continued collaboration between provincial and local governments. With clear goals and strong leadership, the outcomes of this forum are expected to drive real and measurable progress for the people of the Eastern Cape.
