In the remote community of eSiyaya Village, nestled in the rolling hills of Ntabankulu, a sense of excitement and relief filled the air. The Eastern Cape Provincial Government through the Alfred Nzo Health District had brought one-stop-shop services on wheels community outreach to the doorstep of this rural community.
Hundreds of people, from tiny infants to elderly residents, gathered at the venue, eager to access the comprehensive healthcare services. The outreach programme targeted five villages under the eNgwemnyama AA, including eSiyaya, eLubala, eMthonjeni, KwaThahla, and eCacadu.
As the sun shone brightly, the multidisciplinary healthcare team sprang into action, offering a wide range of services. Patients were screened for TB, hypertension, diabetes, and HIV, while others received dental care, optometry, and audiology services. Family planning, immunisation, and pap smears were also available, along with registration for ex-mineworkers and health education. The pharmacy and medicine dispensary ensured that those in need received the necessary treatment, with those who needed further healthcare services, transferred to nearby health facilities.
The atmosphere was one of gratitude and relief, as community members accessed essential healthcare services without travelling long distances. This outreach programme exemplified the department's commitment to bringing services to the people.
