Ground-breaking Oncology Unit Unveiled at Livingstone Hospital

The Eastern Cape Department of Health has taken a monumental step in the fight against cancer by unveiling a state-of-the-art oncology unit at Livingstone Hospital in Gqeberha. Central to this new facility is a cutting-edge R60-million linear accelerator (linac) machine, designed to deliver highly precise cancer treatments.

MEC Ntandokazi Capa officially launched the new machine on Thursday, marking a significant milestone in the region s cancer treatment capabilities. On the same day, the first patients received treatment using the linac, heralding a new era of hope for those battling the disease in the Western region of the province.

The linac machine is expected to significantly enhance treatment options, providing advanced care for cancer patients. In addition to this, the department has also invested in a R37-million CT scanner and a R10-million fluoroscopy unit, further strengthening the oncology services available at Livingstone Hospital.

These substantial investments underscore the department s commitment to combating cancer, a disease that accounts for 74% of deaths worldwide, according to the World Health Organization. We are proud to bring this cutting-edge technology to our region, offering our patients the best possible care,” said MEC Capa. Our investment in this equipment is a testament to our dedication to fighting cancer and improving healthcare outcomes for our communities.”

The same advanced technology is being commissioned in the central region at Frere Hospital in East London, with plans to extend similar services to the Eastern region at Nelson Mandela Central Hospital in Mthatha by 2025.

This significant development represents a major step forward in the fight against cancer in the Eastern Cape, bringing renewed hope to patients and their families across the province.
