Eastern Cape Leverages Hemp for Economic Revival and Sustainable Development

The Eastern Cape Provincial Government, in collaboration with Fort Cox Agriculture and Forestry Training Institute, celebrated a milestone with a hemp field day event at Fort Cox College. This event marked the successful cultivation of hemp, initiated by local farmers trained through the Eastern Cape Rural Development Agency's hemp cultivation course.

Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane and MEC of the Department of Agriculture and Agrarian Reform Nonkqubela Pieters inspected the thriving hemp fields during the proceedings. They praised the yield as a testament to the province's economic potential in cannabis and hemp.

The hemp field, planted in January 2024, symbolizes the province's commitment to fostering a robust hemp primary production sector. It serves as a showcase for Fort Cox College, positioning it as a leading hemp cultivation and processing training institute.

Premier Lubabalo Oscar Mabuyane highlighted the province's journey towards exploring the cannabis and hemp industries as economic drivers. "Five years ago, I delivered my maiden State of the Province Address as the Premier of the Eastern Cape Province. In that Address, I stated that the sixth administration would leave no stone unturned in investigating the cannabis and hemp industry as an economic stimulant. That statement triggered conversations throughout the entire country about cannabis and hemp for social and commercial purposes. Consequently, all stakeholders in our province made efforts to revitalize the production of Cannabis and Hemp, making it another stream for the province's economic growth," said Mabuyane.

In 2018, the Constitutional Court made a landmark decision declaring sections of the Drugs and Drug Trafficking Act unconstitutional, paving the way for the decriminalization of private cannabis use in South Africa. This ruling marked a victory for cannabis, hemp growers, and users nationwide. For the government, it presented an opportunity to foster a thriving cannabis and hemp industry, contributing to economic expansion and generating employment opportunities.

Looking ahead, the Eastern Cape aims to leverage partnerships for research and development in diverse hemp applications, including biofuels and pharmaceuticals. Initiatives like the hemp biofuel trials with PetroSA and investments in medicinal cannabis facilities at Coega SEZ are poised to generate significant employment opportunities across the value chain.

With ambitious plans to integrate biofuels into the national fuel mix by 2027 and capitalize on global biofuel market growth, the Eastern Cape province stands at the forefront of sustainable economic development through the cannabis and hemp industries.
