The Eastern Cape leg of the Community Work Programme (CWP) has been launched in an effort to strengthen collaborative efforts between the government, businesses, and civil society for community development. The theme of the launch, which was held in Gqeberha and was presided over by Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) Deputy Minister, Prince Zolile Burns-Ncamashe, was "Mobilising Public and Private Sector Smart Partnerships for an Impactful CWP toward Artisan and Enterprise Development."
The CWP has undergone a significant overhaul aimed at fostering tangible outcomes and visible results. With a renewed focus on skills development, particularly in technical and artisan fields, the revamped programme aims to boost employability and stimulate entrepreneurship, with special attention given to marginalised groups such as youth, women, and persons with disabilities. The programme's expansion also caters to individuals across various education levels, further broadening its reach and impact.
Speaking at the launch, Premier Lubabalo Oscar Mabuyane highlighted the importance of the implementation of smart partnerships in the success of the programme. "These partnerships leverage innovative solutions and collaborative efforts to maximise impact, aim to complement existing service delivery initiatives while simultaneously building and maintaining community assets. The recruitment processes for the CWP prioritise transparency and fairness, ensuring equal access to opportunities for all participants."
Deputy Minister Ncamashe stated that the redesigned Community Work Programme represents a collaborative effort to harness the potential of both the public and private sectors in driving socio-economic development. By forging Smart Partnerships, we can unlock new opportunities for skills acquisition, entrepreneurship, and inclusive growth," he said.
The ministerial launches, taking place nationwide, serve to introduce Smart Partners to provincial COGTAs, district, and metropolitan municipalities, anticipating a transformative impact on communities and access to economic opportunities with improved livelihoods at the forefront of the agenda.
