The East London Industrial Development Zone (ELIDZ) has announced significant investments to boost the renewable energy sector within the Zone. The total investment amounts to approximately R1.3 billion and is expected to generate around 1144 direct and indirect jobs.
A collaboration between Bushveld Energy Company (Pty) Ltd and the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) is valued at R400 million and is expected to create approximately 69 new direct jobs. The initiative aims to increase the production capacity of vanadium-based electrolytes for the global Vanadium Redox Flow Battery (VRFB) market, thereby enhancing the province's competitiveness as a strategic hub for innovative manufacturing.
Thezi Langa (Pty) Ltd's investment of R920 million is aimed at developing a 50MW photovoltaic solar plant within the ELIDZ's Ntabozuko Precinct. This initiative is expected to create 1000 direct and indirect jobs during its 2-year construction period and an estimated 25 new direct jobs during a 20-year operational period. The objective is to enhance independent energy generation capacity in the Eastern Cape and provide renewable energy to both private and public sectors, thereby attracting further industrial capacity and investment into the province.
Additionally, RAM Hand-to-Hand Couriers are investing R18 million to establish one of its Eastern Cape base hubs within the ELIDZ. This initiative is part of RAM Couriers' expansion plan and will contribute to 50 direct jobs at the ELIDZ Hub. With 42 hubs across South Africa, over 2000 employees, and a fleet exceeding 1800 vehicles, this move will enable RAM to efficiently handle shipments to and from East London and its surroundings, thus strengthening the logistics sector within the ELIDZ.
Eastern Cape Premier Lubabalo Oscar Mabuyane has welcomed the investments in the ELIDZ, emphasizing their significance in addressing unemployment and socio-economic development in the province.
