Health Department Launches Self-Help Wellness Vending Machine
The launch of the Self-Care Wellness Vending Machine in Mthatha is a significant development in addressing reproductive health challenges and promoting wellness in the Eastern Cape. This innovative facility, spearheaded by the National Department of Health, was recently launched by Eastern Cape Health MEC Nomakhosazana Meth and Health Deputy Minister Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo in Mthatha, making it the first of its kind in the country.

These vending machines have been installed in easily accessible public areas such as near institutions of higher learning, shopping centres, and SASSA points, to provide essential health products for those who need them the most. The machines offer a range of necessary items to promote reproductive health and prevent unplanned pregnancies, including oral contraceptives, emergency contraceptives, HIV self-testing kits, and sanitary towels.

This initiative is part of the government's commitment to increasing access to sexual reproductive health and HIV prevention services, especially for young people and women of childbearing age. Moreover, it does not only address practical health needs but also fosters a youth-friendly approach to healthcare, recognizing the preferences and behaviours of young people.

With partners like HIV Care and Soul City, the government is showing responsiveness to evolving healthcare needs and ensuring that all members of the community have access to essential services.
