Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) is planning to build the first Water Desalination Plant at the Port of East London, marking a significant step towards water sustainability. This initiative aims to improve the reliability of freshwater supply, which is crucial for the port's operations in South Africa.
TNPA has awarded a R60 million contract to a joint venture between Norland Civil Engineers and Contractors, as well as Impact Water Solutions (PTY) Ltd (IWS), operating as Sun Water East London, to manage the project for seven years. TNPA's Acting Chief Executive, Advocate Phyllis Difeto, emphasized the project's alignment with strategic objectives to strengthen the resilience of utilities supply.
The plant will generate 0.5 megalitres (ML) of water per day, converting seawater into potable water that meets drinking quality standards. The facility will be powered by solar energy, demonstrating TNPA's commitment to sustainability.
This project is expected to create around 100 job opportunities, contributing to socio-economic development in the East London area. As the Port of East London takes steps towards water sustainability, TNPA reaffirms its commitment to environmental stewardship and resilience-building, setting a precedent for future port developments across the country.
