Eastern Cape Premier Lubabalo Oscar Mabuyane has launched the Teleperformance Centre in Gqeberha to create job opportunities and boost economic growth. The centre, located at Fairview Office Park, will provide training and customer support services across various channels for leading UK Financial Services and Retail Clients. It will host 500 new positions for young people.
Teleperformance, a global leader in digital business services, has invested R100 million in this venture, marking its second significant investment in South Africa. The company's first site opened in Cape Town in 2009. This investment shows investor confidence in the Eastern Cape's economic potential and aligns with the government's commitment to fostering development partnerships.
Premier Mabuyane praised Teleperformance's decision to expand in Gqeberha, highlighting its strategic significance in tackling unemployment. The 500 employment opportunities indicate the start of a larger initiative to create 2.5 million jobs over the next five years.
According to Premier Mabuyane, the province's focus on Global Business Services (GBS) is aimed at stimulating economic growth amidst challenges. GBS emerges as a pivotal contributor, offering substantial employment prospects. By tapping into this sector's potential, the Eastern Cape aims to address unemployment while fostering inclusive economic development.
The provincial government has introduced incentive packages through the Eastern Cape Development Corporation (ECDC) to attract and support investments in GBS. These initiatives aim to position the Eastern Cape as a premier destination for offshored services, leveraging its skilled workforce and digital infrastructure.
Special economic zones, such as the Coega Business Process Outsourcing Park, offer tailored infrastructure and incentives to facilitate GBS investments. Municipalities like Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan complement these efforts through tax rebates and infrastructure support, further enhancing the region's appeal to investors.
