The Eastern Cape Provincial Government is committed to public health and disease control and recently took significant strides to raise awareness and tackle tuberculosis (TB) within the Sarah Baartman District. In partnership with the Eastern Cape Aids Council, the province coordinated a comprehensive awareness program in Port Alfred to mark World TB Day, which is a crucial step in the fight against this persistent health challenge.
Despite considerable advancements in TB control efforts, the Sarah Baartman District continues to face the daunting reality of being among the top five high-burden districts for TB in the province. To address this issue head-on, this year's commemoration was themed "Yes, You and I can end TB", which emphasizes the importance of being accountable as an individual and as a collective.
Before the event, the province conducted extensive screening activities that reached over 28,000 individuals, including nearly 10,000 children under five years old. The campaign successfully tracked and traced over 400 individuals who had discontinued TB treatment, ensuring they received the necessary support. Additionally, over 3,300 people were tested for HIV, with 48 testing positive and promptly starting treatment.
Acknowledging the significant progress made, particularly in reducing TB death rates, the province remains committed to addressing challenges. The implementation of the TB Recovery Plan and the introduction of a six-month treatment regimen for drug-resistant TB marks notable milestones in improving treatment outcomes and patient experience. The new treatment regimen significantly reduces the number of tablets patients must take, enhancing adherence and overall patient care.
However, the government emphasizes the need to address social and infrastructure barriers that hinder effective responses to TB and HIV, advocating for collaboration with social partners to overcome these challenges.
