The Eastern Cape Provincial Government paid homage to the memory of those who lost their lives in the Langa Massacre, marking the 39th anniversary of the tragic event. Held during the Human Rights Day commemoration in Kariega, the solemn occasion served as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made in the struggle for justice and equality.

Among those remembered were the Mpenzana, Jantjies, and Tshinida families, whose names resonate as symbols of resilience and defiance against oppression. The Langa community in Kariega bore witness to a horrific act of violence on March 21, 1985, when approximately 35 lives were lost, and 27 others wounded at the hands of the apartheid police.

Premier Lubabalo Oscar Mabuyane delivered a heartfelt keynote address, urging all citizens to unite in building a brighter future guided by the principles of democracy, equality, and justice. He emphasised the importance of honouring the legacy of the Langa Massacre by ‘rededicating ourselves to creating a society where every individual can live with dignity, freedom, and opportunity .

This year's Human Rights Day is commemorated under the theme: 'Three Decades of Respect for and Promotion of Human Rights', marking the 30th anniversary of freedom and democracy. The Eastern Cape Government seized the occasion to celebrate the progress made in healthcare, education, and economic development while acknowledging the challenges ahead.

The Provincial Government reaffirms its commitment to addressing key priorities such as job creation, industrial development, and investing in people's skills. Through collective action and unwavering determination, the Government strives to uphold the values of human rights and honour the memory of those who sacrificed their lives for a better tomorrow.
