In a heartwarming display of community support, the life of 94-year-old Eunice Senzela from Sugarbush in the Mzimvubu Local Municipality was transformed.
This was achieved during a momentous and historical occasion when the Eastern Cape Provincial Government provided decent quality houses to families living in dilapidated mud structures in the area.
Senzela, who previously lived with 10 dependents in a deteriorating mud house, is one of the housing beneficiaries of the Mnceba 1000 (53) Rural Housing project spearheaded by the Department of Human Settlements. The elderly woman expressed her gratitude for this significant period, reflecting the immense impact of this intervention on her quality of life.
"My house was in a bad state, on rainy days it would get very wet, and the bed had to be covered with plastic. We don't have to worry about that now, I can't believe I have moved to a new house," Senzela said.
The Mnceba 1000 (53) project prioritizes the well-being of vulnerable groups, particularly elderly women, by offering safe and comfortable housing solutions equipped with water tanks, toilets, and electricity.
During the official handover ceremony, MEC Siphokazi Lusithi reiterated the government's commitment to providing dignified housing solutions and restoring the dignity of impoverished communities. With the successful completion of phase two and the unblocking of historically blocked projects, including those in the Alfred Nzo District Municipality, the initiative represents a significant step towards addressing housing challenges and improving living conditions in the Eastern Cape.
