INFRASTRUCTURE INVESTMENT BRINGS IMPROVED ACCESS TO WARD 22, BENEFITING MORE THAN ONE THOUSAND COMMUNITIES

Umzimvubu Local Municipality is continuing to invest in infrastructure that responds directly to the needs of communities, with the Njijini to Bangweni Project currently underway in Ward 22, in KwaBhaca.

The project seeks to restore a vital link for communities following the destruction of the existing bridge by natural disasters. Upon completion, the project is expected to benefit residents from 8 villages in Ward 22, improving connectivity and providing safer and more reliable access for community members.

The Njijini to Bangweni Project includes the reconstruction of 5.03 kilometres of gravel road, together with the construction of a new bridge and improvements to drainage infrastructure along the route.

The road rehabilitation works include heavy roadbed preparation, which entails ripping and recompacting the existing road to a depth of 150mm and compacting it to the required 90% Mod AASHTO density. This work also includes the construction of side drains and mitre drains to improve stormwater management. A 150mm thick base wearing course will also be constructed, while existing culverts are being cleaned and new culverts constructed where required to improve drainage and protect the road infrastructure.

A key component of the project is the construction of a cast in-situ bridge measuring approximately three metres in height and 19.6 metres in length. The bridge will restore an important crossing for the 8 villages and improve the movement of residents, goods and services within the area. The project is also contributing to local economic opportunities, with 13 local people currently employed through the construction works. This ensures that the project delivers benefits beyond physical infrastructure by creating employment opportunities for people from the surrounding villages.

“We have been struggling since the bridge was destroyed. Crossing this area became very difficult, especially for elderly people and children. Seeing the construction of the new bridge gives us hope that we will once again be able to move freely and safely,” said an elderly woman, Mama Mamjoli Makanda.

“Once completed, the Njijini to Bangweni Project will provide a safer and more reliable road and bridge connection for Ward 22 communities, while strengthening access to essential services, economic opportunities and neighbouring areas. The ongoing project reflects Umzimvubu Local Municipality's commitment to addressing infrastructure backlogs and implementing development that responds to the lived realities of its rural communities”, said Mayor Zukiswa Ndevu.

Through this project, the Municipality continues to advance its commitment to Uphuhliso Kumntu Wonke, ensuring that infrastructure investment translates into meaningful and lasting benefits for the communities it serves.
