The Eastern Cape Provincial Government has marked a major milestone in education infrastructure with the official handover of the new Bethelsdorp Comprehensive School in Salt Lake, Gqeberha. The state-of-the-art school, officially opened by Premier Lubabalo Oscar Mabuyane alongside MEC for Education Fundile Gade, represents a significant investment in the future of learners, educators and the wider community of Bethelsdorp.
For more than five decades, the school has served as a beacon of learning for families in Bethelsdorp. Established in 1972, the institution has a rich history closely linked to communities that were displaced under apartheid and who looked to education as a pathway to a better future. Today, that legacy continues through a modern school designed to provide learners with the facilities and opportunities they need to succeed in a rapidly changing world.
The new school features 31 classrooms, two science laboratories, a technical workshop, an ICT centre, a library and media centre, a nutrition kitchen, administration facilities, improved security infrastructure and sports facilities. These resources are expected to strengthen teaching and learning while supporting the holistic development of learners.
Addressing learners, educators and community members during the handover ceremony, Premier Lubabalo Oscar Mabuyane emphasised that the school is more than a collection of buildings. “Today, we honour that history by handing over a modern school that gives our young people the facilities they deserve. Our responsibility is to make sure that every learner has a pathway to a meaningful future,” said Premier Mabuyane.
The Premier highlighted the importance of preparing learners for future economic opportunities, particularly in sectors such as manufacturing, renewable energy, technology and other emerging industries. He encouraged learners to take full advantage of the opportunities available to them and to see education as the foundation for future success.
The project represents an investment of approximately R112.75 million and has delivered benefits beyond education. More than R94 million was spent on local businesses, suppliers and construction-related activities, while 18 local SMMEs participated in the project. In addition, community members received accredited construction-related training and valuable workplace experience through graduate and trainee opportunities.
Speaking on the significance of the project, MEC Fundile Gade said the new facility demonstrates government's ongoing commitment to quality education and learner development. “The official handover of Bethelsdorp Comprehensive School represents far more than the completion of a construction project. It is a tangible investment in the future of our learners, our communities and our province,” said MEC Gade.
The opening of the new school forms part of broader efforts by the Eastern Cape Provincial Government to modernise school infrastructure, improve access to quality education and create learning environments where every child can thrive. As learners begin this new chapter, the school stands as a symbol of progress, resilience and hope for future generations.
With its proud history, improved facilities and renewed sense of purpose, Bethelsdorp Comprehensive School is well positioned to continue shaping young minds and empowering learners to become productive, skilled and active citizens who will contribute meaningfully to the development of the Eastern Cape.
