The Eastern Cape Department of Agriculture has invested R3.8 million in agricultural infrastructure aimed at strengthening food production, creating jobs, and supporting rural economic development in the Mhlontlo Local Municipality. The infrastructure was officially handed over by Agriculture MEC Nonceba Kontsiwe, during a visit to farming projects in the OR Tambo District. The investment forms part of the department's ongoing efforts to improve agricultural productivity, enhance food security, and create sustainable economic opportunities across rural communities in the province.
At Sigubudwini Village handover programme, MEC Kontsiwe presented infrastructure support to Vivi-Am Holdings, a youth-led farming enterprise specialising in vegetable production. The package includes an irrigation system, storage facilities, and fencing valued at R3.8 million. The irrigation system serves 11 hectares of cultivated land, while the fencing covers a total area of 20 hectares.
Speaking during the handover, MEC Kontsiwe praised the commitment shown by the young farmers and highlighted the importance of empowering youth participation in agriculture. She noted that the farmers’ dedication, coupled with access to established markets, demonstrates the potential of agriculture to drive economic growth and employment in rural communities.
Representing the beneficiaries, Sihle Guzane of Vivi-Am Holdings said the department's support has significantly improved the enterprise's production capacity. According to Guzane, the upgraded irrigation system allows the farm to grow crops throughout the year and ensures a reliable water supply for improved yields. The expanded operation has also enabled the project to employ both permanent and seasonal workers. In addition, the farm received a tractor from the Department of Agriculture in June, further strengthening its operations.
The department's support extends beyond commercial farming initiatives. In Nyanisweni Village Spring Water Protection Project, MEC Kontsiwe, accompanied by Mbulelo Jara, Mayor of Kumkani Mhlontlo Local Municipality, and Mbuti Voko, officially handed over a spring water project designed to improve access to clean water for local households and support community food production activities.
The project aligns with Section 27 of South Africa's Constitution, which guarantees access to sufficient water as a fundamental right. Community members now have access to a more reliable water source for domestic use and irrigation purposes. During the project's installation phase in May 2025, 40 residents were employed, creating temporary job opportunities in the area.
Further support was provided to vulnerable households through the distribution of agricultural inputs worth R80,000. Twelve households with backyard food gardens received fertiliser and vegetable seedlings to strengthen household food production and improve food security.
