A vision first conceived in 2018 has officially become a reality for young entrepreneur Pendula Mbali, who recently opened Nikos Water Supplies in kwaSdima, Cuba Township. Supported by the Mnquma Local Municipality, the new enterprise supplies water, ice, and ice cream to the local community. The launch stands as a testament to ongoing local and provincial efforts to promote youth entrepreneurship and stimulate localized economic development.
Mbali’s journey reflects the profound impact of equipping the youth with the skills needed to turn innovative ideas into sustainable enterprises. Empowered by the municipality’s Local Economic Development and Planning Unit, Mbali recently completed the Basic Business Skills Programme and was proudly awarded his certificate during the launch event.
To ensure the business's operational success, the Mnquma Local Municipality provided a vital equipment injection valued at R110,000. This comprehensive support package includes advanced water treatment and filtration equipment, a reverse osmosis system, ice-making machinery, a filling table, and a water dispenser, giving Nikos Water Supplies the essential infrastructure to thrive and serve the township safely.
Speaking at the launch, Acting Mayor and Portfolio Head for Strategic Management, Councillor Sisa Matutu, reaffirmed the government's commitment to backing proactive young citizens. He encouraged the youth to shift their focus from seeking employment to becoming job creators themselves. Councillor Matutu pointed to the youth-led agricultural cooperative Ulutsha Lendalo as another prime example of how targeted municipal support can translate into sustainable, long-term opportunities that actively combat youth unemployment.
The opening of Nikos Water Supplies marks more than just the start of a commercial business; it is a beacon of hope for the community. "When one business grows here, it opens the door for others," Mbali shared, highlighting his drive to inspire fellow young people to pursue their own entrepreneurial ambitions. Ultimately, this success story demonstrates how personal determination, coupled with dedicated government support, can build enterprises that uplift entire communities across the province.
