Residents of Luncedweni and Dedelo villages, Ward 17, in Ntabankulu Local Municipality are on the brink of a major milestone in service delivery, following the official handover of the highly anticipated Luncedweni Water Supply Scheme. The Alfred Nzo District Municipality (ANDM), led by Executive Mayor Tsileng Sobuthongo alongside Members of the Mayoral Committee and Ntabankulu Speaker Nomvula Kinase officially handed over the project site to the appointed contractors, Route 17 CVE Trading and Projects, who will be working in partnership with Lebutaka Consulting Engineers.
Funded through the Water Services Infrastructure Grant (WSIG), this R3.997 million investment is set to directly benefit an estimated 70 households that have historically faced severe challenges in accessing reliable and quality water services. Scheduled for a rapid four-month implementation period, the comprehensive water infrastructure upgrade includes the improvement and optimization of the existing spring water source and borehole, construction of approximately five kilometres of new water reticulation infrastructure and the installation of accessible communal standpipes for residents.
Beyond the immediate health and social benefits of clean water, the project is designed to act as an economic catalyst for the ward. The construction phase is expected to create approximately 15 local employment opportunities, while also opening avenues for local emerging enterprises to participate in sub-contracting and project-related activities.
Addressing the community during the handover, Mayor Sobuthongo emphasized that the initiative is a testament to the district's mandate to uplift rural communities.
“The implementation of this project demonstrates the Municipality’s commitment to improving basic services, particularly water, and ensuring that our communities receive quality service delivery," said the Mayor. "This project brings renewed hope to the residents of Luncedweni and Dedelo by bringing clean and reliable water closer to their homes.”
The community's reception has been overwhelmingly positive. Local resident Mr. Iviwe Thoko welcomed the intervention, urging the government to continue accelerating the delivery of essential services across the region. He expressed strong confidence that the project would be completed within the agreed timeframe and bring tangible, daily improvements to the villages.
To ensure these promises are met, ANDM has committed to strict oversight. The municipality will closely monitor the implementation over the next four months to ensure the infrastructure meets all required quality standards and delivers maximum benefit to the people of Ntabankulu.
