As part of ongoing efforts to strengthen agricultural development and promote sustainable livelihoods, the Alfred Nzo District Municipality, in partnership with the Eastern Cape Development Corporation (ECDC), has handed over essential agricultural equipment to farmers in eLubhacweni in Mzimvubu Local Municipality.
The handover was led by the Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Local Economic Development, Councillor Banele Qwayede, who confirmed the municipality's commitment to supporting emerging farmers and improving agricultural productivity across the district.
The initiative forms part of the municipality's broader strategy to develop the agricultural sector, stimulate local economic growth and enhance food security in communities within the Alfred Nzo District. By equipping local farmers with modern farming equipment, the municipality aims to improve production capacity, increase efficiency and create opportunities for sustainable income generation.
The agricultural equipment handed over includes a tractor trailer, boom sprayer, tractor planter and a weighing scale. This equipment will assist farmers in improving various farming operations, including planting, crop maintenance, harvesting logistics and accurate measurement of agricultural produce. Access to such equipment is expected to reduce production costs, improve operational efficiency and enable farmers to expand their farming activities.
Councillor Qwayede highlighted the importance of agriculture as a key driver of economic development and job creation in rural communities. She encouraged beneficiaries to utilise the equipment responsibly and collaboratively to maximise its impact and ensure that farming continues to contribute towards poverty alleviation and household food security.
The Alfred Nzo District Municipality remains committed to working with strategic partners such as the Eastern Cape Development Corporation to empower local farmers, strengthen rural economies and build resilient communities through inclusive and sustainable agricultural development.
