The Eastern Cape Province has bid a dignified farewell to the late Chairperson of the House of Traditional and Khoisan Leaders, Nkosi Mpumalanga "Gwebingqele" Gwadiso, during a Special Provincial Official held at Nkanunu Great Place in Ngqeleni.
Thousands of mourners, including members of the royal family, traditional leaders, government representatives and community members, gathered to celebrate the life and legacy of a respected custodian of culture, unity and traditional leadership. The Provincial Official Funeral was accorded in recognition of Nkosi Gwadiso's distinguished contribution to public service, community development and the advancement of traditional leadership in the Eastern Cape.
Delivering the eulogy on behalf of the Eastern Cape Provincial Government, Premier Lubabalo Oscar Mabuyane described Nkosi Gwadiso as a humble servant leader whose legacy would continue to inspire future generations.
"The passing of Nkosi Gwadiso is a great loss not only to his family but to the people of the Eastern Cape. He dedicated his life to serving others and made a lasting contribution to the development of our communities. We honour his legacy and extend our deepest sympathies to his loved ones during this difficult time," said Premier Mabuyane.
As head of the AmaKhonjwayo Traditional Council and Chairperson of the Eastern Cape House of Traditional and Khoi-San Leaders, Nkosi Gwadiso championed community development initiatives with a strong emphasis on agriculture and food security. Through programmes such as maize production and household food gardens, he helped improve livelihoods, combat poverty, create employment opportunities and promote sustainable socio-economic development through partnerships and active community participation.
Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) MEC Zolile Williams described Nkosi Gwadiso as a principled leader and passionate advocate for social justice.
"He took a firm stand against gender-based violence and femicide, promoting safer and more inclusive communities. His leadership extended to the national stage through his active involvement in the Congress of Traditional Leaders of South Africa (CONTRALESA), where he earned widespread respect for his commitment to cultural preservation, collaborative governance and inclusive social development," said MEC Williams.
The funeral service reflected the profound respect and admiration that Nkosi Gwadiso commanded throughout the province and beyond. His life of selfless service, commitment to cultural heritage and dedication to community upliftment leaves an enduring legacy that will continue to guide traditional leadership and inspire future generations.
The Eastern Cape Provincial Government once again extends its heartfelt condolences to the Gwadiso family, the AmaKhonjwayo Traditional Council, the House of Traditional and Khoi-San Leaders, and all those whose lives were touched by Nkosi Mpumalanga "Gwebingqele" Gwadiso.
