The Eastern Cape Department of Education has reached another important milestone in its ongoing programme to improve school infrastructure with the completion of the newly built David Livingstone High School in Schauderville, Gqeberha.
The state-of-the-art school was officially handed over by Eastern Cape Premier Lubabalo Oscar Mabuyane and the MEC for Education, Fundile Gade, in a ceremony attended by learners, educators, government officials and members of the local community.
The handover reflects the Eastern Cape Provincial Government's ongoing commitment to improving education infrastructure across the province. By investing in safe, modern and inclusive schools, government continues to create opportunities for learners to thrive while equipping educators with the facilities they need to deliver quality education.
Built at the total cost of R149.6 million, David Livingstone High School has been transformed into a modern learning institution with facilities that respond to the needs of both learners and educators. The new administration block includes a reception area, administration offices, deputy principals' offices, a counselling office, staff room, computer room, library, printing room, kitchen, dining area and storage facilities. Six new classrooms have also been added on the first floor, creating more space for teaching and learning.
In addition to the new buildings, the project included extensive renovations to existing infrastructure. These upgrades feature three additional classrooms, a Head of Department's office, a fully equipped science laboratory and an auditorium, further enhancing the school's ability to deliver quality education. Additional storage facilities and a caretaker's room were also constructed to support the daily operation of the school.
The improvements extend beyond the classroom. Learners now have access to a newly constructed netball court, a rehabilitated rugby field and upgraded external facilities, including boundary fencing, walkways, landscaped grounds, parking areas and a guard house. New ablution facilities, including those accessible to persons with disabilities, ensure that the school provides a safe and inclusive environment for all.
The official handover of David Livingstone High School demonstrates the Eastern Cape Provincial Government s continued investment in education through the Department of Education, reflecting its dedication to building schools that inspire excellence and create opportunities for future generations. By delivering quality infrastructure, the Provincial Government is not only improving learning conditions but also contributing to stronger communities and better educational outcomes across the Eastern Cape.
