UMZIMVUBU LOCAL MUNICIPALITY'S AGRICULTURAL SUPPORT PROGRAMME DELIVERS HARVEST OF OPPORTUNITIES FOR EMERGING FARMERS

The Umzimvubu Local Municipality continues to translate its commitment to rural development into tangible results through its Agricultural Support Programme, with the successful maize harvest by the Mxhinweni Farming Project in Ward 13 standing as a testament to government investment in community empowerment and food security.

The project, comprising 12 members, including women, men and young people, is among the many community-based farming initiatives benefiting from the municipality's ongoing efforts to unlock agricultural potential, create sustainable livelihoods and stimulate local economic growth.

As part of its agricultural support interventions, the municipality cultivated five hectares of maize for the Mxhinweni Farming Project during the current planting season. The project is expected to harvest more than 900 bags of maize, providing a valuable source of household food security while generating income for participating members.

Chairperson of the Mxhinweni Farming Project, Mr Malixole Langa, commended the municipality for its consistent support.

"This is the third consecutive year that the municipality has supported us with cultivation. Their assistance has enabled us to improve our production, and this year's harvest is our best yet. We are grateful for the continued partnership and look forward to earning income from the sale of our maize," said Mr Langa.

Executive Mayor, Cllr Zukiswa Ndevu, said the municipality remains steadfast in advancing inclusive rural development by investing in emerging farmers and strengthening the agricultural economy.

"Agriculture remains a key pillar of our local economic development strategy. Through programmes such as these, we are empowering communities to become active participants in the economy, creating employment opportunities, improving food security and building resilient rural livelihoods. The success of the Mxhinweni Farming Project demonstrates the impact of government working hand in hand with communities to improve lives," said Cllr Ndevu.

The Mxhinweni Farming Project forms part of 61 agricultural projects supported by the Umzimvubu Local Municipality during the 2025/2026 financial year. Through these targeted interventions, the municipality continues to reaffirm its commitment to building a thriving agricultural sector, empowering emerging farmers and ensuring that rural communities are equipped to contribute meaningfully to the district's economic growth and long-term development.
