TEARS OF JOY AS ADELAIDE FAMILIES RECEIVE THEIR TITLE DEEDS

There were tears of joy, heartfelt prayers and overwhelming gratitude in Adelaide as 182 families received title deeds to their homes, marking a significant milestone in their legal ownership and security of tenure. The title deeds were handed over by the Eastern Cape MEC for Human Settlements, Siphokazi Lusithi, as part of government's ongoing Title Deeds Restoration Programme. The initiative seeks to address the backlog in the issuing of title deeds, ensuring that beneficiaries of government housing programmes receive full legal ownership of their homes.

When government hands over a title deed, it is confirming that your home is truly yours. It gives you legal security, protects your family from unlawful dispossession and provides an asset that can be transferred from one generation to another. It enables families to build wealth, access financial opportunities and invest confidently in improving their homes. This is why as the government of the people remains committed to accelerating the transfer of title deeds throughout our province”, said MEC Lusithi.

Before the official handover ceremony at the Adelaide Community Hall, MEC Lusithi visited elderly beneficiaries in their homes to personally hand over their title deeds, making the occasion even more meaningful for the recipients and their families. For elderly Lydia Mbambeni and her husband Eric Mbambeni (85), receiving their title deed was a dream realised.

"We are so happy that we have finally received our title deed. It means so much to us and our family. We now have peace of mind knowing that this home legally belongs to us. This is something we have waited for over many years, and today our hearts are full of joy," they said.

The 182 title deeds form part of the Adelaide 428 Subsidy Scheme and the Adelaide 624 Project. An emotional moment unfolded when the MEC visited Nondwe Makhenyana (67), a visually impaired beneficiary, at her home. Overcome with emotion, Makhenyana described the day as a blessing she had long prayed for.

"I am very, very happy that this day has finally come. God does not come Himself; He sends His people. Today, He has remembered me through those who brought me my title deed. I thank God for allowing me to witness this day, and I am deeply grateful to everyone who made it possible," she said.

The Title Deeds Restoration Programme continues to restore dignity and security to beneficiaries by providing them with legal proof of homeownership. For many families, a title deed is more than just a legal document it represents stability, pride and the opportunity to build a lasting legacy for future generations. For the beneficiaries in Adelaide, the handover was not simply the receipt of a document; it was the fulfilment of a long-awaited promise and the beginning of a more secure future.
