The Eastern Cape Department of Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism (DEDEAT), led by MEC Nonkqubela Pieters, marked World Environment Day by investing in local economic development, handing over more than R2.1 million in financial support to businesses and cooperatives in the Elundini Local Municipality.
Held at Nqanqarhu Town Hall in the Joe Gqabi District Municipality, the commemoration brought together provincial and local government representatives, traditional leaders, community members and departmental entities to celebrate environmental stewardship while delivering tangible support that will strengthen livelihoods and promote inclusive economic growth.
Through the Automotive Aftermarket SMME Incentive Programme, Informal Business Support Programme and the Imvaba Cooperative Fund, entrepreneurs and cooperatives received equipment and financial assistance aimed at expanding their businesses, improving productivity and creating employment opportunities within their communities.
The handover reflects DEDEAT's commitment to building resilient local economies by supporting township and rural enterprises while ensuring that economic development is aligned with environmental sustainability. By investing in small businesses and cooperatives, the Department continues to create opportunities that enable communities to participate meaningfully in the province's economy.
As part of the World Environment Day commemoration, MEC Pieters also participated in a ceremonial tree planting, symbolising the shared responsibility to protect biodiversity, conserve natural resources and safeguard the environment for future generations.
The event demonstrated that economic development and environmental sustainability are not separate priorities, but complementary goals. By combining investment in local enterprises with environmental initiatives, DEDEAT continues to advance a development model that creates jobs, empowers communities and contributes to a greener, more resilient Eastern Cape.
